Gottfried Gruben considered himself a historian who, through the methods of architectural history, treated the monument itself as a source, paying special attention to questions of religion and art, which are defining factors of Greek temples. Apart from thorough and detailed research and interdisciplinary discussion, Gruben always considered the communication of finds to the general public of paramount importance. This collection of shorter texts aims exactly at this readership. Topics include: the role of the architect and classical architectural history, the development of the Greek temple, aspects of ionian temples in the Greek isles, and present-day problems with ancient ruins. German text.

The Berlin relief sculpture of a physician, a Greek dedicatory relief from the late 1st century BC, comes from the old Venetian Grimani collection and was purchased by the Berlin Royal Museums at the beginning of the 19th century. It shows the heroic figure of a physician receiving sacrifices from his admirers, together with a case with surgical instruments. Among the Late Hellenic grave and dedicatory reliefs this is a unique combination, in which -supported by relevant pictorial material - four separate domains are addressed: antique collections in 16th and 17th century Venice, heroic cults of private individuals in Hellenic Greece, the status and honouring of physicians in Antiquity, surgical instruments and operating techniques in Antiquity.
