Biotechnology Entrepreneurship: From Science to Solutions fills a critical gap in the biotechnology industry. For all the resources on how to start companies and on how to manage established companies in other sectors, there is a dearth of material on unique and critical issues in starting biotechnology companies, as well as managing the transition from start-up to established company. It is to this gap that Biotechnology Entrepreneurship is directed. By combining the voices of a diverse set of industry insiders with extensive experience in biotechnology, Biotechnology Entrepreneurship prepares nascent founders, managers, investors, and other biotechnology company stakeholders to position themselves and their companies for commercial success.

Research and development of novel medicines for human therapy commonly takes over a decade before significant revenues from sales are forthcoming. How can biotechnology companies be founded and grow successfully in an industry with such extended innovation processes? The book investigates this problem and distinguishes three growth phases: From incorporation and start-up through collaborative R&D with large pharmaceutical firms to value creation from R&D pipelines to Public Offerings and product marketing. In this book a dynamic simulation model for testing different decision-making strategies is developed. For each phase the author identifies decision rules that provide for successful corporate growth.

This book is aimed at providing a large audience, including practitioners, politicians and decision-makers, with useful insights in relation to innovation and entrepreneurship in the biotechnology industry. It offers an international perspective and a set of theoretical lenses to underline the roles and the effects of entrepreneurship and scientific innovation as key factors to support new firm emergence and to achieve and maintain competitiveness in this so important industry. Alain Fayolle, EM Lyon, CERAG Laboratory, France and Solvay Business School, Belgium The biotechnology industry across the globe is growing dramatically in line with rapidly emerging scientific and technological developments. This book explores both the theoretical and practical aspects of entrepreneurship in the biotechnology industry, focusing on the innovation processes underpinning success for new biotechnology firms (NBFs). It argues that biotechnology is at a crossroads: to date the science has been solid, yet commercial success remains elusive, and that it will be the commercial success of NBFs which will dictate the long term viability of this crucial industry. The authors go on to examine the roles played by both entrepreneurship and innovation in the competitiveness of biotechnology companies through a focus on: intellectual property strategies, product development, valuing biotechnology ventures, funding innovation and R&D, alliances and networking, changing industry structures evidenced through the shifting value chain and the impact of globalization on the changing industry and organizational life cycles. International case studies with a focus on human biosciences support the important theoretical developments at the heart of this book. Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology offers original and valuable insights to researchers, academics and students as well as to practitioners involved with innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of biotechnology.

Mainly due to the potential of knowledge spillovers facilitated by spatial proximity biotechnology firms may benefit from the spatial collocation of similar firms so that they increase their venture capital funds. Essay 1 employs a spatial autoregressive model and finds that venture capital accumulation is augmented by the collocation of biotechnology and venture capital firms within an about 10 miles radius. Spatial externalities wane considerably outside the 10 miles radius and exhaust themselves at about 20 miles. Despite the importance of federal money as the primary source of R & D in biotechnology, relative little research has analyzed the marginal contribution of federal dollars on local firm births. Essay 2 employs a Poisson count data fixed effects model and finds that federal financial outlays towards a region's universities and established private firms eventually translate to increased firm birth rate for the region in question. The empirical results also suggest that private firms are considerably more conducive in spurring local birth rate than universities and research institutes/hospitals. Given the rise of the entrepreneurial university and its focus on local economic development, Essay 3 analyzes factors affecting academic faculty to start their biotechnology firm(s) locally. The estimated results of an ordered logit model highlight the importance of regional, institutional and personal attributes.

Under the vast umbrella of Plant Sciences resides a plethora of highly specialized fields. Botanists, agronomists, horticulturists, geneticists, and physiologists each employ a different approach to the study of plants and each for a different end goal. Yet all will find themselves in the laboratory engaging in what can broadly be termed biotechnology. Addressing a wide variety of related topics, Plant Tissue Culture, Development, and Biotechnology gives the practical and technical knowledge needed to train the next generation of plant scientists regardless of their ultimate specialization. With the detailed perspectives and hands-on training signature to the authors’ previous bestselling books, Plant Development and Biotechnology and Plant Tissue Culture Concepts and Laboratory Exercises, this book discusses relevant concepts supported by demonstrative laboratory experiments. It provides critical thinking questions, concept boxes highlighting important ideas, and procedure boxes giving precise instruction for experiments, including step-by-step procedures, such as the proper microscope use with digital photography, along with anticipated results, and a list of materials needed to perform them. Integrating traditional plant sciences with recent advances in plant tissue culture, development, and biotechnology, chapters address germplasm preservation, plant growth regulators, embryo rescue, micropropagation of roses, haploid cultures, and transformation of meristems. Going beyond the scope of a simple laboratory manual, this book also considers special topics such as copyrights, patents, legalities, trade secrets, and the business of biotechnology. Focusing on plant culture development and its applications in biotechnology across a myriad of plant science specialties, this text uses a broad range of species and practical laboratory exercises to make it useful for anyone engaged in the plant sciences.

The biotechnology business in India with an increase from USD 500 million in 1997 and reaching an estimated USD 1 billion next year health related prod ucts accounting for 60%, agro and veterinary products together 15%, and con tract R&D, reagents, devices and supplies adding up to the remaining 25% of which the diagnostics share was about 10% of the total surely presented an encouraging picture even five years ago. While volumes have increased, the pat tern has not. According to a report, prepared by McKinsey & Co, India's Phar maceutical industry including domestic and export sales and contract services totals nearly USD 5 billion. Furthermore, the company optimistically projects the growth to a factor of five fold only if both the industry and the government are able to put in place achievable solutions that must take care of the formida ble obstacles preventing further growth. If this assessment is correct, then the established transformation made by IT growth should also provide the confi dence required by the high expectations for biotechnology which have arisen in the country in recent years. Some contributors to this are overenthusiastic these are bureaucrats, some retired scientists and of course the complacent politicians who have the least knowledge of what the new biotechnology is all about. However, there are clear indications of biotechnology growth demon strated by a few but rapidly expanding biotech companies such as Biocon Ltd, Shantha Biotech (P) Ltd, Dr.
